USE THE RIGHT MATERIALS
Use boxes that have a lid so that they can be properly sealed. Make sure they are strong enough to hold the weight of the items that you put in them. Do not use boxes that have holes in them or are torn. Newspaper is fine to pack fragile goods, as long as you don't mind washing the dishes after you move. Moving packing paper is unprinted newspaper. Use proper moving tape. The correct moving tape sticks well to cardboard and prevents the top and bottom from opening or coming apart.
PACK TIGHTLY
Make sure that there are no empty spaces in the box. This will prevent items from shifting in the box during transit and will also ensure that the box will keep its shape and not crush. Stuff any empty spaces with newspaper, bubble wrap, linens etc.
DON'T USE YOUR FURNITURE AS BOXES
Do not pack items in desks, cabinets and dressers. Most items are not built to be moved when they are filled. Drawer bottoms can come loose. Even if there is no visible damage, moving filled items will weaken them.
